Jewelry Care

There’s nothing like the sparkle of a piece that’s well loved  a ring passed down through generations, a necklace that marks a special trip. At Altamira Jewels, we design pieces that become part of your story. But jewelry needs a little love to stay gorgeous. Welcome to your Jewelry Care companion: a friendly, practical guide to cleaning, storing, and protecting your Altamira Jewelry so it keeps shining for years.

Why Jewelry Care Matters

Jewelry is both sentimental and valuable emotionally and financially. Everyday exposure to skin oils, soaps, perfume, sweat, and environmental pollutants can dull metals and stones. Regular care:

  • Preserves shine and color

  • Prevents damage and lost stones

  • Keeps your heirlooms wearable for years

Quick daily routine (2 minutes)

A simple daily habit prevents most problems:

  1. Wipe jewelry gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.

  2. Put jewelry on last after makeup, perfume, and hair products.

  3. Remove rings and bracelets before washing hands or exercising.

Cleaning by material (what actually works)

Gold (solid gold, 9–24K)

  • Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Soak 10–15 minutes, gently brush with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and dry with a microfiber cloth.

  • Avoid chlorine (pools, hot tubs)  it weakens gold over time.

Silver & Sterling Silver

  • Use mild soap and water for light cleaning. For tarnish, make a paste of baking soda + water, rub gently, rinse and dry.

  • Store with anti-tarnish strips. Avoid abrasive cleaners that scratch.

Gold-plated / Vermeil

  • Don’t soak. Wipe gently with damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid polishing compounds and ultrasonic cleaners  they remove plating.

Pearls & Porcelain-like beads

  • Wipe after wearing with a soft damp cloth; pearls are porous and should never be soaked. Store flat to avoid string stretch. Keep away from acidic cosmetics.

Gemstones (diamonds, sapphires, rubies)

  • Most hard stones tolerate warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners for porous or treated stones (e.g., emeralds, opals).

Costume jewelry

  • Wipe with a damp cloth. Keep away from moisture and perfumes. When in doubt, consult us before cleaning.

Safety note: If a stone seems loose or you’re unsure what it’s made of, stop cleaning and contact a professional. Incorrect cleaning can cause irreversible damage.

Storage & travel tips

  • Store pieces individually (soft pouches/compartmented box) to prevent scratching.

  • Use anti-tarnish strips for silver. Silica gel packs help with humidity.

  • For travel, use a small, padded jewelry roll that keeps items separate and secure.

Professional maintenance & when to seek help

  • Loose stones, broken clasps, worn prongs, or resizing ring them in for professional repair.

  • Consider professional cleaning and inspection at least once a year for pieces you wear often. We offer polishing, stone tightening, and rhodium re-plating for white gold.
